Our Story
On March 13, 2017 Doctor Martha Cohen opened its doors. The seats were filled with hundreds of unique learners with individual hopes, needs, and wants. The school really hit the ground running. The sports teams were skillful, the academics were in full tilt, and the community was growing. One thing the school lacked was a GSA. A Gay-straight alliances (GSAs) and queer-straight alliances (QSAs) promote welcoming, caring, respectful and safe schools for LGBTQ2S+ students and their allies.
So in 2018, through collaboration between teachers, support staff, and students Section 15 was born. Named after the Equality Rights section of the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms, Section 15 was a place for students to be themselves...no matter who that was (or who they were becoming). We had lessons, guest speakers, parties, and cake! The community grew like wild fire. Students from grades 5-9 were all represented. The community was flourishing well into 2020. However, as we know the schools were closed due to Covid -19. Thus, Section 15 had to make an abrupt stop. As well so did the support our students were able to receive throughout our community.
Fast forward to March 22, 2021. Through professional learning, collaboration, and technology Section 15 has come back to life! We are now online and here to support the students of DMC. This site will be an ever evolving platform for students to learn, grow, and look for support in a safe digital way.
Please feel free to check out what we have to offer here, from resources to the online question box this is for the students of DMC!
